The Global Talent Stream — for UK tech workers in a hurry
The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a fast-track work permit category designed for highly skilled tech, engineering and specialised knowledge professionals. For UK software engineers, data scientists, cyber specialists and senior product managers, GTS can deliver a Canadian work permit in 2 weeks rather than 2 months.
Why GTS exists and how it works
GTS is an ESDC programme that lets Canadian tech employers fast-track LMIA approval for specific in-demand occupations. Two streams:
- Category A: Referred by a designated partner organisation (e.g. provincial innovation agencies, accelerators)
- Category B: Occupations on the official Global Talent Occupations List — software engineers, computer programmers, web designers, database analysts, electrical and electronics engineers, mathematicians, statisticians
UK tech NOCs that qualify
- 21231 Software engineers and designers
- 21232 Software developers and programmers
- 21234 Web developers
- 21233 Web designers
- 21220 Cybersecurity specialists

- Employer LMIA application: 10 days
- Worker permit application: 2 weeks
- Biometrics: 1 week
- Total UK-to-Toronto: 4–6 weeks realistic
Salaries UK tech workers command

Vancouver pays similar or slightly higher in tech-heavy companies (EA, Amazon, Microsoft). Montréal pays 10–15% less but cost of living offsets.
