Open Work Permit — the most underrated UK route
The Open Work Permit (OWP) lets you work for almost any Canadian employer, in any role, without an LMIA. For UK spouses and partners of Canadian workers or students, the OWP is often the fastest and cheapest way to start a Canadian career.
Who qualifies for a Canadian Open Work Permit
- Spouses and common-law partners of skilled foreign workers in Canada
- Spouses and common-law partners of full-time international students in Canada
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders
- IEC Working Holiday participants
- Refugee claimants and protected persons
- Applicants in the inland spousal sponsorship process (Spousal Open Work Permit)
- Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) — for PR applicants whose existing work permit is about to expire
UK spouses — what changed in 2024–2026
Canada tightened OWP eligibility in 2024. Today, the spouse of a student qualifies only if the student is enrolled in a master’s, doctoral, or selected professional programmes. The spouse of a worker qualifies only if the worker holds a job at NOC TEER 0 or 1, or in select TEER 2/3 occupations on the priority list. UK families need to check their specific eligibility before assuming OWP access.
Documents UK applicants need
- UK passport
- Proof of relationship (marriage certificate or 12+ months cohabitation)
- Spouse’s Canadian work permit or study permit copy
- Spouse’s job letter (for worker dependants) showing TEER level and salary
- Biometrics
- Medical exam if employment in healthcare, education or childcare is intended
Application timeline from the UK
An OWP application from the UK is currently processed in 4–10 weeks. Family-of-worker and family-of-student applications submitted together with the principal applicant are decided together — useful for families relocating in one move.
Bridging Open Work Permit — the PR safety net
If you are already in Canada on a closed work permit and you have applied for PR through Express Entry, PNP, CEC or a PR pilot, you can apply for a BOWP to extend your right to work while the PR application is processed. UK candidates use this to avoid a forced return when their original permit expires.
Open Work Permit vs IEC Working Holiday
IEC is age-limited (18–35) but does not require a Canadian spouse. OWP has no age limit but requires you to be a dependant of an existing Canadian worker, student or PR applicant. They serve different UK applicant profiles.
Why OWPs accelerate your PR plan
OWP work counts as Canadian work experience for the Canadian Experience Class, the same way employer-specific work counts. UK families relocating together can use one PR-pathway permit for the principal and an OWP for the spouse, doubling their Canadian-experience CRS gains.
Your OWP eligibility check
OWPs are the most flexible work permits Canada issues, but eligibility now depends on the principal applicant’s TEER level and program. Apply now for a Canada Central OWP check and we will tell you which member of your household qualifies and how to structure your move.
