Federal Skilled Worker — the classic route for British professionals
The Federal Skilled Worker Program is the original Canadian economic immigration stream, and for many British applicants it is still the cleanest route. This guide walks through eligibility, points and submission strategy for UK candidates planning to use FSW in 2026.
FSW eligibility checklist for UK applicants
You must clear three minimum requirements before CRS points even matter:
- Skilled work experience — at least one year of continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work in the past 10 years, in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation.
- Language — CLB 7 in all four English skills (IELTS General Training 6.0 in each band).
- Education — Canadian secondary diploma or a foreign equivalent assessed via ECA. A UK bachelor’s, A-levels-plus-degree, or recognised diploma qualifies.
The 67-point selection grid
FSW also imposes a separate pass-mark grid of 67 out of 100. Most British applicants comfortably clear this with: age (12 max if under 36), education (25 for a master’s, 23 for a bachelor’s), language (28 max for CLB 9), experience (15 max), arranged employment (10 if applicable), adaptability (10 max).
How UK degrees are assessed
A UK bachelor’s degree is generally treated as equivalent to a Canadian three-year bachelor’s. A UK master’s is treated as a Canadian master’s. The exact equivalency is set by World Education Services (WES), ICES, CES or IQAS, and the resulting Educational Credential Assessment is required for both FSW and CRS scoring.
NOC codes British professionals most often use
- 21231 Software engineers and designers
- 21232 Software developers and programmers
- 11102 Financial advisors
- 11202 Professional occupations in business management consulting
- 30010 Nursing coordinators and supervisors
- 72200 Electricians
- 72310 Carpenters
- 73300 Transport truck drivers
Choosing the right NOC is the single most consequential decision you make in FSW. Get it wrong and your CRS evaporates.
What FSW looks like vs CEC and FST
The Canadian Experience Class requires Canadian experience you do not yet have. The Federal Skilled Trades stream targets manual trades. FSW is the default for office-based British professionals.
Submission strategy for UK applicants
- Pull your ACRO police certificate, ECA and IELTS results before you create the profile.
- Submit profile within 60 days of receiving your IELTS — language scores are valid for two years but momentum matters.
- Apply for category-based draws in parallel if your NOC qualifies.
- If your CRS is below 470, file in parallel for a PNP nomination.
Documents UK applicants underestimate
Reference letters must list your duties (not just titles) and match the NOC. UK P60s do not substitute for reference letters. Self-employed UK candidates need contracts, invoices and HMRC records. Two-year+ employment gaps trigger officer questions and need written explanations.
Your FSW assessment
Federal Skilled Worker is winnable for most UK professionals, but only with clean documents and the right NOC. Apply now for a Canada Central FSW audit and we will tell you, in writing, whether you qualify and what your defensible CRS is.
