Federal Skilled Trades from the UK: Plumbers, Electricians, Welders

Federal Skilled Trades — the underused UK route

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST) is the Express Entry stream most UK tradespeople do not realise they qualify for. Plumbers, electricians, welders, carpenters, HVAC technicians and heavy-equipment mechanics with UK trade qualifications routinely meet the bar.

Eligibility for FST from the UK

  • Two years of paid full-time skilled trades experience in the past five years
  • One of: a valid Canadian trades job offer (12+ months full-time) OR a Canadian Certificate of Qualification in your trade
  • Language CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing
  • Trade falls within NOC major groups 72, 73, 82, 83 or 92, 93

UK trade qualifications that count

NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds Level 3, SVQ Level 3, JIB Gold Card, Gas Safe, Part P, IPAF, CSCS, and most apprenticeship-completion certificates are widely recognised. Provincial certification still has to happen after landing, but for FST eligibility the UK qualification plus 2 years of experience is enough.

NOC codes UK tradespeople most often use

  • 72200 Electricians (except industrial and power system)
  • 72300 Plumbers
  • 72106 Welders and related machine operators
  • 72400 Heavy-duty equipment mechanics
  • 72310 Carpenters
  • 72500 HVAC mechanics
  • 72204 Industrial electricians

Provincial certification — your post-landing path

Each province operates its own trade certification body (Skilled Trades Ontario, SkilledTradesBC, Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training). Most accept UK qualifications via a credential challenge plus an exam. Our regulated trades and professions guide covers the per-province path.

FST vs FSW for UK tradespeople

FST has lower language thresholds than FSW (CLB 5 vs 7) and lower education requirements, but FSW often scores higher on CRS because it gives more education points. Tradespeople with strong English and a UK bachelor’s-equivalent qualification sometimes win more by going FSW. A free legal assessment compares both for your specific trade.

Documents UK tradespeople need

  • UK qualification certificate plus apprenticeship completion letter
  • Reference letters from past employers listing NOC duties
  • Job offer letter or Canadian Certificate of Qualification
  • IELTS General Training
  • ACRO police certificate

Trades category draws — the lower-CRS shortcut

IRCC’s category-based draws for Trades have closed in the 420s and 430s — well below general-draw cut-offs. For a UK tradesperson with CLB 7 English this is the most efficient route to an ITA.
