Canada Work Permit from the UK — the realistic timeline
A Canada work permit from the UK is for most British professionals the fastest legal way to land and start working in Canada. Unlike Permanent Residence, it does not require a CRS score, an ECA or proof of long-term funds. What it does require is the right legal basis — and that is what trips up most UK applicants.
The two-second decision tree
- Do you have a Canadian employer willing to support you? If yes, you are heading for an LMIA-based or LMIA-exempt employer-specific permit.
- Are you 18–35 and from the UK? If yes, the IEC Working Holiday route gives you an open work permit.
- Is your spouse working or studying in Canada? If yes, you qualify for an Open Work Permit as a dependant.
- None of the above? A work permit on its own is unlikely; consider PR routes via Express Entry.
Application steps for the employer-specific permit
- Receive a written job offer from a Canadian employer.
- Employer applies for an LMIA (or confirms LMIA-exempt status) — usually 6–12 weeks.
- You apply for the work permit through the IRCC online portal — typically 4–8 weeks for UK applicants.
- Biometrics at a UK Visa Application Centre — 10 working days for completion.
- Receive a Port of Entry Letter, fly to Canada, collect work permit at the airport.

Documents UK applicants need
- UK passport valid 6 months past intended Canadian stay
- Job offer letter with NOC code, salary and duties
- LMIA confirmation or LMIA-exempt offer of employment number
- CV in Canadian-style format
- Proof of past UK employment in the relevant occupation
- Police certificate from ACRO (if requested)
- Medical exam (only for certain occupations and longer permits)
Processing times in 2026
UK applicants are currently seeing 4–8 weeks for employer-specific work permits and 6–10 weeks for IEC permits. Add 2 weeks for biometrics and visa office quality checks. Total UK-to-airport realistic timeline: 8–14 weeks once your employer has the LMIA.
Common refusal reasons for UK candidates
- Weak or generic offer letter that does not match NOC duties
- Missing proof of return to home country if the officer doubts intent
- Incomplete employment history in the past 10 years
- Past travel history not declared
- Self-employment income not properly documented
