Atlantic Immigration Program from the UK: Full Guide

Halifax Nova Scotia harbour representing Atlantic Canada UK immigration

Why Atlantic Canada has become a serious UK destination

The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) was made permanent in 2022 and has matured into one of the most welcoming immigration routes for British professionals. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island all participate, and they actively recruit UK candidates.

Why UK families choose Atlantic Canada

  • House prices a fraction of London, Toronto or Vancouver
  • Small but growing British expatriate communities
  • NHS-style healthcare reachable within minutes of major centres
  • Direct seasonal flights from Heathrow and Manchester to Halifax
  • Cultural and linguistic familiarity (English-speaking, British heritage)

How the AIP works

The AIP is employer-driven. A designated employer in an Atlantic province offers you a job, then endorses your application. You receive a provincial endorsement and apply for PR through the federal AIP stream. The whole flow is faster and simpler than Express Entry.

Eligibility for UK applicants

  • Job offer from a designated Atlantic employer (intermediate to highly skilled, NOC TEER 0–3 most often; TEER 4 in some healthcare and trades roles)
  • 1 year of related work experience in the past 5 years
  • Educational Credential Assessment (UK degree, diploma or trade qualification)
  • Language CLB 5 (intermediate) or CLB 4 (lower-skilled streams)
  • Proof of funds
  • Settlement plan with an Atlantic settlement service provider

The four Atlantic provinces — quick UK overview

Nova Scotia

Halifax is the regional hub. Healthcare, IT, ocean technology, finance and tourism. UK NHS nurses, allied health professionals and IT specialists in particular are sought after.

New Brunswick

Fredericton and Moncton. Bilingual benefits (English-French), strong demand in IT, manufacturing and trades. PNP and AIP routes both active.

Newfoundland and Labrador

St. John’s. Healthcare, oil and gas, education and trades. Some of the most affordable real estate in Canada.

Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown. Smaller scale, but very strong AIP and PNP support for UK candidates in healthcare, trades and agri-food.

AIP timeline

Designated employer offer (1–3 months), provincial endorsement (2–4 months), federal PR application (6–8 months). Total: 12–14 months from UK to landing.

What documents UK applicants need

  • UK passport
  • Job offer from designated AIP employer
  • ECA report
  • IELTS General Training
  • UK reference letters (NOC duties)
  • Settlement plan
  • ACRO police certificate
  • Medical exam
  • Proof of funds

How to find a designated AIP employer

Each Atlantic province publishes a list of designated employers. Canada Central’s JobSearch service maintains an updated UK-friendly subset focused on healthcare, IT and trades. Direct outreach with a strong, NOC-tailored CV remains the most effective channel.

Settlement and integration

AIP requires you to register with an authorised settlement service provider before landing. They provide pre-arrival orientation, post-arrival housing support, school enrolment help and language assessment. This is included in the AIP framework at no cost to you.

Your AIP application
