If you hold a UK accountancy qualification and are weighing up a move across the Atlantic, one question sits above all the others: how do you become a chartered professional accountant in Canada? The Canadian profession unified under a single CPA designation in 2014, and today every province regulates it separately. The good news for ICAEW, ICAS and CIMA members is that recognition agreements exist. The less good news for ACCA members is that the direct route closed in 2021 and, as of 2026, has not reopened. This guide explains what each pathway looks like in practice and how it fits into your Canadian immigration plan.
Why the CPA designation matters for UK accountants moving to Canada
In the UK, an ACCA, ICAEW or CIMA badge is enough to open most doors. In Canada, employers, audit clients and public-sector bodies overwhelmingly expect the CPA letters. You can legally work in bookkeeping, financial analysis, internal audit or management accounting without them, but promotions, signing authority on assurance engagements and many senior finance roles are reserved for members of a provincial CPA body. Treating the designation as part of your relocation project, rather than something to sort out after landing, saves months of frustration and often a salary step.
Which UK bodies have agreements with CPA Canada in 2026?
CPA Canada renewed several of its international agreements in early 2026, so the landscape is settled for the next few years. Here is where each major UK body stands:
- ICAEW (England and Wales): a reciprocal membership agreement was renewed in February 2026. Qualified members in good standing can apply to a provincial CPA body without sitting the full Canadian professional education programme.
- ICAS (Scotland): covered by a comparable reciprocal agreement, giving Scottish CAs a streamlined route to CPA membership.
- Chartered Accountants Ireland: also recognised, which matters for Northern Ireland-qualified accountants.
- CIMA: listed among the bodies with mutual recognition rights, so management accountants are not left out.
- ACCA: the former mutual recognition agreement ended on 30 April 2021 and had not been replaced at the time of writing. ACCA members instead apply through the general route for members of other IFAC bodies, which typically means credential assessment plus some CPA Professional Education Program modules and the Common Final Examination.
Agreements are negotiated at the national level but administered provincially, so you will apply to CPA Ontario, CPA British Columbia, CPA Alberta and so on, not to CPA Canada directly. Requirements can differ slightly between provinces, particularly around the Canadian tax and law module and the practical experience review.
What ICAEW, ICAS and CIMA members can typically expect
Under a reciprocal agreement, the provincial body usually asks for proof of membership in good standing, confirmation that you qualified through the body’s own examinations rather than a reciprocal arrangement elsewhere, and evidence of relevant post-qualification experience. Most provinces then require you to complete a short Canadian tax and business law component and to attend a professional ethics or reciprocity module. Public accounting rights, meaning the ability to sign audit opinions, carry additional experience and examination conditions in every province.
The route for ACCA members
Without an active agreement, ACCA members are assessed on a case-by-case basis. The provincial body reviews your degree, your ACCA papers and your experience, then maps them against the CPA competency framework. Expect to be granted exemptions for a portion of the programme and to be asked to sit the remaining modules and the Common Final Examination. Many ACCA members choose to begin this process while still in the UK so that the CPA timeline runs alongside the visa timeline rather than after it.
Sequencing your CPA application with your visa
The mistake we see most often is UK accountants treating professional recognition and immigration as two separate queues. They are not. A recognised designation strengthens almost every immigration route you might use:
- Express Entry. Accountants fall under a skilled NOC category, and a strong profile through the Federal Skilled Worker stream depends on your education assessment, language scores and work history. Our guide to calculating your CRS score from the UK walks through the points in detail.
- Provincial nominee programs. Several provinces run in-demand occupation or skilled worker streams where a job offer in finance carries real weight. Registering with the provincial CPA body early signals to employers that you are serious, which in turn makes securing that offer easier. See our overview of provincial nomination programs.
- Employer-sponsored work permits. If a Canadian firm wants to hire you before permanent residence is granted, a work permit can bridge the gap, and the firm may support your CPA transition as part of the package.
Whichever route you choose, you will need an Educational Credential Assessment for your degree. Our article on getting a WES ECA for a UK degree explains the process, and it is worth noting that the ECA and the CPA body’s assessment are separate exercises with separate paperwork.
Where the accounting jobs are
Toronto remains the financial centre and hosts the largest concentration of Big Four, mid-tier and corporate finance roles. Calgary’s energy sector and Vancouver’s technology and real estate industries also hire steadily, and Ottawa’s federal public service employs a large number of CPAs in audit and policy roles. Remote and hybrid arrangements have widened the map considerably since 2020, so a role based in Ontario no longer necessarily means living in the Greater Toronto Area. If you would like help identifying employers who regularly hire internationally qualified accountants, our job search service is built for exactly that.
Practical tips before you apply
- Request a letter of good standing from your UK body early; some provincial CPA bodies want it sent directly from the institute.
- Keep detailed records of post-qualification experience, including the competencies covered, as the Canadian practical experience review is more granular than most UK members expect.
- Decide on your target province before applying to a CPA body, because transferring between provincial bodies later adds a further step.
- Book your language test even if you are a native English speaker; immigration streams still require an approved test result.
