Exchange Your UK Driving Licence for a Canadian One

UK driving licence and Canadian provincial driver licence side by side

UK driving licence to Canadian licence — the exchange most newcomers underestimate

One of the simplest wins after landing: most Canadian provinces have a reciprocal agreement with the UK that lets British driving licence holders exchange for a full provincial licence without a road test. This guide walks through the exchange in each province, the documents you need, and the deadline you must not miss.

Why timing matters

Most provinces let you drive on a UK licence for the first 60–90 days after landing. After that you need a provincial licence to drive legally. The exchange process varies by province but is usually a same-day affair if you bring the right documents.

Provinces with a direct UK exchange agreement

  • Ontario: Direct exchange to Class G full licence — no road test, no knowledge test
  • British Columbia: Direct exchange to Class 5 — knowledge test usually waived if licence is full UK
  • Alberta: Direct exchange to Class 5
  • Saskatchewan: Direct exchange to Class 5
  • Manitoba: Direct exchange to Class 5 driver’s licence
  • Nova Scotia: Direct exchange to Class 5
  • New Brunswick: Direct exchange to Class 5
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: Direct exchange to Class 5
  • Prince Edward Island: Direct exchange to Class 5
  • Quebec: Direct exchange to Class 5 within 6 months of arrival

Documents you need at the exchange office

  • Original UK driving licence (full, not provisional)
  • UK passport
  • PR card or work permit
  • Proof of Canadian address (utility bill, lease, bank letter)
  • SIN (some provinces)
  • Eye test confirmation (usually done at the exchange office)
  • DVLA driving record letter (recommended) — issued by DVLA on request showing your full driving history

The DVLA record letter is the single most under-requested document — get it before you fly, it speeds the exchange and is sometimes required for commercial licences.

HGV / CDL / Commercial licence exchange

UK Cat C, C+E and CPC drivers usually need to retest in Canada to get Class 1, 3 or A commercial licences, although your UK experience is recognised and most pass on the first attempt. Specialist trades schools in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba run accelerated UK-driver bridging programs. See our UK truck drivers moving to Canada guide.

Motorcycle licence exchange

Most provinces exchange a UK motorcycle licence (Cat A) for a Class 6 provincial motorcycle endorsement, often without a riding test. Bring the same documentation plus your UK CBT/Mod 1/Mod 2 confirmation if available.

UK driving record vs Canadian insurance

Your UK no-claims bonus does not automatically transfer to Canadian insurance. However, most Canadian insurers (especially in Ontario and BC) will recognise UK driving experience if you provide:

  • DVLA driving licence history letter
  • UK insurance broker letter confirming your no-claims years
  • Copy of your most recent UK insurance certificate

Bring both before you negotiate Canadian insurance — you can save several hundred dollars per year.

Car-buying tips for UK newcomers

  • Allow 4–6 weeks before buying — you will want a Canadian credit card, a Canadian licence and a Canadian address first
  • Consider winter conditions when choosing the car — front-wheel drive minimum, AWD preferred outside southern Ontario and coastal BC
  • Snow tyres are mandatory in Quebec from December 1 to March 15; strongly recommended everywhere else outside Vancouver
  • Check provincial used-car inspection rules — Ontario requires a Safety Standards Certificate, BC requires an out-of-province inspection
  • Most provincial insurers want 6–12 months of Canadian residence before offering best rates; bring your UK no-claims documentation to negotiate
