Canada Family Sponsorship from the UK: Spouse, Children, Parents

Family sponsorship — when love is your immigration strategy

If you have a partner, child, parent, grandparent or sibling who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, Canada family sponsorship bypasses the points system entirely. There is no CRS calculation, no employer search and no LMIA. The Canadian sponsor takes financial and legal responsibility for you, and the federal process moves accordingly.

Who can be sponsored from the UK

  • Spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner
  • Dependent children (under 22)
  • Parents and grandparents (through the Parents and Grandparents Program)
  • Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandchild under 18
  • In limited cases, an other relative if the sponsor has no living family

Spousal sponsorship — the most common UK case

If you are married to or in a common-law relationship with a Canadian citizen or PR, you can be sponsored. Common-law requires 12 months of continuous cohabitation. Same-sex relationships are treated identically.

Two streams:

  • Outland (Family Class Overseas) — you stay in the UK while the application processes; processed via UK visa office
  • Inland (Spouse in Canada Class) — both partners must be in Canada; comes with a Spousal Open Work Permit

UK applicants whose Canadian spouse lives in Canada typically choose Outland because it allows free travel during processing.

Eligibility for the Canadian sponsor

  • 18+ years old
  • Canadian citizen, PR, or registered Indian
  • Not in receipt of social assistance (except for disability)
  • Not currently sponsoring another spouse who has not yet completed undertaking
  • Not bankrupt or convicted of certain offences
  • Income requirements for spousal sponsorship: none (unlike PGP which requires MNI thresholds)

Documents required from UK partner

  • UK passport biographical page
  • Marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation
  • Relationship evidence: shared bank accounts, tenancy agreements, photos, messaging history, travel records
  • UK ACRO police certificate
  • Medical exam
  • Sponsor’s Canadian documents

Spousal sponsorship timeline (2026)

  • Outland UK applications: 12–14 months
  • Inland applications: 12 months with OWP eligibility

Parents and Grandparents Program

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is a separate annual lottery — IRCC selects sponsors who submitted Interest to Sponsor forms. Sponsors must meet Minimum Necessary Income thresholds for the prior 3 years. UK parents in particular can use the Super Visa route as an alternative — a 10-year multi-entry visitor visa with up to 2 years per stay.

Common UK spousal sponsorship mistakes

  • Weak relationship evidence (one wedding photo and a marriage certificate is not enough)
  • Inconsistent dates of cohabitation
  • Failure to declare prior marriages
  • Submitting Inland when one partner is not in Canada
  • Mismatched income or employment claims between sponsor and applicant

Children sponsorship

Dependent children under 22 (with no spouse) can be sponsored separately or together with a sponsored spouse. Adopted children require additional adoption documentation. Children born to a Canadian citizen overseas may already be Canadian by descent.
