Canada study permit from the UK — and the PR ladder that follows
A Canada study permit is one of the most underrated PR pathways for UK candidates. You arrive on a student visa, earn a Canadian credential, switch to a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), accumulate Canadian work experience, and apply for PR through the Canadian Experience Class. The whole ladder is well documented and widely used.
The study-to-PR ladder in seven steps
- Choose a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) eligible for PGWP
- Receive a Letter of Acceptance
- Apply for a Canada study permit from the UK
- Complete the academic programme (8 months – 4 years)
- Apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit
- Work 12 months in skilled NOC TEER 0–3
- Apply for PR through the Canadian Experience Class
Eligibility for the study permit
- Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian DLI
- Proof of funds covering tuition, the IRCC-required living-cost minimum, and return travel
- Letter of intent / statement of purpose
- Ties to UK demonstrating you will leave if you do not transition (proof of return intent)
- Educational background
- UK ACRO police certificate
- Medical exam (depending on programme and duration)
- Biometrics
Best Canadian universities for UK students
- University of Toronto, McGill, UBC — top Canadian research universities
- Waterloo, McMaster, Queen’s, Western — strong engineering, business, sciences
- SFU, York, Concordia, Calgary, Alberta, Dalhousie, Ottawa — research-intensive with strong PGWP routes
- Many colleges (Centennial, Sheridan, BCIT, Humber) — shorter programmes, lower fees, full PGWP eligibility
UK qualifications recognised for Canadian university entry
- A-levels (typically AAA-BBB depending on programme)
- Scottish Highers / Advanced Highers
- International Baccalaureate
- UK bachelor’s degree (for master’s-level entry)
- English language: usually IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (some programmes 7.0)
Working while studying
You can work up to 24 hours/week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. Co-op programmes count toward the PGWP eligibility timeline.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
The PGWP is an open work permit equal in length to your study programme (up to 3 years). 12 months of skilled work under PGWP qualifies you for CEC PR. Recent 2024 rule changes narrowed PGWP eligibility for some programmes — check the current eligible-programme list before enrolling.
Family who can come with you
Spouses of master’s, PhD, or selected professional-programme students qualify for a Spousal Open Work Permit. Children of study permit holders can attend Canadian schools at resident tuition rates.
UK applicant timeline
- Application to DLI: 2–6 months before programme start
- Study permit decision: 4–10 weeks from UK
- Study programme: 8 months – 4 years
- PGWP: equal to study duration, up to 3 years
- CEC PR after 12 months of skilled work: 5–8 months processing
- Total UK-to-PR via study: 2.5 – 6 years depending on programme length
