Canadian Experience Class — for UK workers already inside Canada
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is the PR stream for people who have already worked legally in Canada. For UK candidates this is most often the second half of a two-step strategy: arrive on a work permit, then convert to PR through CEC.
Who CEC is built for
Anyone holding a valid Canadian work permit who has at least 12 months of paid, skilled, full-time work experience in Canada (or an equivalent in part-time) within the past three years. UK nationals on closed work permits, open work permits, Post-Graduation Work Permits and Working Holiday IEC permits all qualify, provided the work is in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation.
CEC eligibility checklist
- 12 months continuous Canadian skilled work experience (TEER 0–3)
- CLB 7 for TEER 0 and 1 occupations; CLB 5 for TEER 2 and 3
- Work performed legally (a work permit or authorised status throughout)
- Intention to live outside Quebec
Why UK candidates choose CEC over FSW
Canadian work experience is the single highest-value variable in CRS:
- One year of Canadian experience adds ~40 CRS points directly
- Combined with strong English, it adds another ~50 via skill transferability
- An LMIA-supported offer adds 50–200 on top
A British candidate with 12 months of Canadian experience and CLB 9 routinely scores 500+ — well above the general draw cut-off.
The two-step UK strategy
Step 1: arrive on a work permit
Most British candidates arrive via an LMIA-supported employer offer, an LMIA-exempt category (intra-company transfer, GATS, NAFTA/CUSMA professional), or the IEC Working Holiday open work permit.
Step 2: enter CEC after 12 months
Submit an Express Entry profile, select CEC as the program, and apply for PR. Most CEC applications are processed within 5 months.
Common CEC pitfalls for UK applicants
- Counting part-time work incorrectly (1,560 hours equals one year of full-time)
- Including unpaid internships
- Including self-employed work that was not authorised under the original permit
- Submitting before reaching the 12-month threshold
- Working in Quebec, which has its own selection system
What happens if your work permit is expiring
You can apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) once your PR application is acknowledged, which legally extends your right to work in Canada while your CEC PR application is processed.
Your CEC eligibility check
Already in Canada on a work permit? Your fastest legitimate path to PR is almost certainly the Canadian Experience Class. Apply now for a CEC eligibility check, and we will count your work hours, audit your NOC, and prepare a 5-month PR plan.
