Work, travel, and gain Canadian experience – with a smart plan from Canada Central

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a temporary work-and-travel program for young adults from countries that have a youth mobility agreement with Canada, usually aged 18-30 or 18-35, depending on nationality.

IEC allows participants to live and work in Canada for a limited time, explore the country, and gain valuable Canadian work experience. While IEC does not grant permanent residence, many participants later use their Canadian experience to qualify under Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), or employer-driven pathways.

With Canada Central, IEC is more than just a gap-year visa – it becomes a strategic first step toward building a future in Canada.

What IEC Offers

IEC gives eligible young adults the opportunity to work legally in Canada while travelling and experiencing Canadian life.

The program operates through three main categories, each designed for different goals:

  • Working Holiday – Open work permit for flexible travel and casual work

  • Young Professionals – Employer-specific permit for career-focused jobs

  • International Co-op (Internship) – Employer-specific permit for student internships

All IEC work permits are:

  • Temporary

  • LMIA-exempt

  • Usually valid for 12-24 months, depending on your country’s agreement

IEC Categories Explained

Working Holiday – Maximum Flexibility

The Working Holiday category is ideal for participants who want freedom and flexibility.

It suits people who:

  • Do not have a job offer before arrival

  • Want to work for multiple employers

  • Plan to travel across Canada while earning money

You receive an open work permit, allowing you to work for most employers, in most locations, for the duration allowed by your nationality.

Canada Central helps Working Holiday participants plan jobs that can later support PR eligibility.

Young Professionals – Career-Focused Experience

The Young Professionals category is designed for structured, career-building employment.

To qualify, you must:

  • Have a job offer in Canada before applying

  • Work in a role that contributes to your professional development

  • Usually work in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations

  • In some cases, TEER 4 roles may qualify if closely related to your studies

You receive an employer-specific work permit, tied to that job and employer.

This category is especially valuable for building skilled Canadian work experience.

International Co-op (Internship) – For Students

The International Co-op (Internship) category is for students completing work placements.

You must:

  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary institution

  • Have a job offer for a work placement or internship in Canada

  • Show that the placement is part of your academic program

You receive an employer-specific work permit for the duration of the internship.

Canada Central helps ensure internship roles meet immigration and academic requirements.

General Eligibility Requirements

To participate in IEC, applicants must meet baseline conditions.

You generally must:

  • Be a citizen of an IEC-eligible country (or use an approved partner organization)

  • Be within the age range for your country (usually 18-30 or 18-35)

  • Hold a valid passport for the entire stay

  • Purchase health insurance covering your full stay

  • Hold a return ticket or have funds to buy one

  • Have no accompanying dependants

  • Be admissible to Canada (medical, criminal, and security)

Each country’s agreement sets:

  • Maximum age

  • Number of participations allowed

  • Permit length

  • Annual quotas

Canada Central verifies country-specific rules before you apply.

How IEC Works – Pool & Invitation System

IEC is not first-come, first-served. It operates through a pool and invitation system.

Typical process:

  1. Create an online IEC profile

  2. Enter the pool for your chosen category and country

  3. Wait for rounds of invitations

  4. If invited, submit a full work permit application within the deadline

  5. Pay fees and submit biometrics (if required)

Each country and category has annual quotas, so not all candidates receive invitations.

Canada Central helps optimize profiles and timing to improve invitation chances.

Typical Documents Required

IEC applications usually include:

  • Passport and digital photo

  • Proof of citizenship and age

  • Police certificates (if required)

  • Proof of funds (around CAD 2,500)

  • Proof of health insurance

  • Return ticket or proof of funds to buy one

Additional documents for:

  • Young Professionals / Co-op – Job offer and employer details

Once approved, you receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction.
The actual work permit is issued when you arrive in Canada, if all conditions are met.
